What is Long Term Care?
Long-term care provides people who have chronic physical limitations with help they need tp perform basic activities of daily living (ADLs). As opposed to skilled medical care that is covered by health insurance to help people return to good health, long-term care insurance covers services to help them remain functional. These services include assistance with getting dressed, eating, bathing, transferring from one place or position to another, going to the bathroom, or maintaining continence.
Long-term care, sometimes called custodial care, also includes services designed to protect the safety of people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other cognitive limitations. While some of this care is provided by home health aides and other unskilled workers, a significant amount is provided by working family members and friends who are not paid for their services.
